Artificial intelligence. The phrase alone likely conjures up a range of ideas, from a blissful utopian future to humanity’s eventual extinction at the hands of an Arnold Schwarzenegger style robot. The reality is likely somewhere in the middle, but the real misconception is that artificial intelligence is just a concept for tomorrow—AI is here, it’s present, and it’s already making our lives better.

Nevertheless, many of those in the know are confident that AI still has a lot more to come. In an interview with startup accelerator Y Combinator, SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that,

“in terms of things that I think are most likely to affect the future of humanity, I think AI is probably the single biggest item in the near term that’s likely to affect humanity. So it’s very important that we have the advent of AI in a good way.”

With that calibre of support, you’d think AI would be universally loved. But whether it has been the wheel or the internet, fear of the unknown has always been the case with new technology. The fear of AI seem to stem from a few causes: general anxiety about machine intelligence, the fear of mass unemployment, concerns about super-intelligence, and overall caution when it comes to new technology.

But the reality is that AI brings benefits in our daily lives, working behind the scenes to help society out in several ways. So, if in fact AI is not something to be feared, how can it help society thrive? Here are a few examples.

Healthcare improvements

AI excels at recognising patterns in large volumes of data, extracting relationships between complex features in the data, and identifying characteristics that cannot be easily perceived by the human brain.

Integration of AI in specific healthcare fields such as cancer care has not only improved the accuracy and speed of diagnosis, leading to better health outcomes, but has also improved the identification of tumours and the efficacy of tumour immunotherapy.

AI can also manage the use of chemotherapy drugs, accelerate the discovery of new treatments, and predict the tolerance of them to optimise treatment. These features help doctors make correct treatment decisions, reduce unnecessary surgeries, and help improve patients’ cancer treatment plans.

Creating new job positions

According to a new report, artificial intelligence is set to create 58 million new jobs by 2022. For AI to function properly, humans will be needed to check, improve, and manage it. With this net positive job growth, there is expected to be a major shift in quality, location, and permanency for new roles.

In addition, companies are expected to expand the use of contractors doing specialised work. New positions will be created, which will require additional skills for managing the interface between technology and humans.

24/7 availability

As technology advances and companies develop intuitive chatbots to offer greater customer service, AI will become a truly viable solution to customer service problems at any hour of the day. AI is incredibly good at multitasking and is also able to handle multiple queries at once. This is especially beneficial for customer service teams at high volume call times of the year, such as the holidays. The bottom line is that AI will be there for you when no one else is.

AI makes everyday life easier

From smart homes to virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa, AI is there to assist us with routine tasks. It makes our lives easier in ways that we already take for granted. AI is becoming smarter when it comes to making customised recommendations that fit the individual. From movie, food, and music recommendations to suggesting products on eCommerce websites, AI is helping us figure out what we want—sometimes before we even know what it is.

AI’s brilliance is to combine the creativity of humans with the efficiency of technology. There is an infinite number of ways AI can help make our world a safer, healthier, and a more enjoyable place. Automation powered by AI is helping to improve the society we live in today and is shifting our expectations to ever greater standards.

So what about that utopian future? We’ll have to wait and see; after all, no matter how important AI becomes for tomorrow’s society, nothing will replace the human touch.
